Genetic Conservation

"The time may come where we could come that we need to come back to you, and that's what I think would be a brilliant thing, that we could be sharing our genetics together in the next forty or fifty years." -Lenice Bell

Groups Contributing toward Genetic Conservation

RBST
Rare Breeds Survival Trust is the leading national charity working to conserve and protect the United Kingdom's rare native breeds of farm animals from extinction. We believe in the value of the UK's rich and varied livestock heritage and that this needs to be conserved as a vital genetic resource for future generations and the benefit of agriculture.

Our Vision-

To secure the continued existence and viability of the UK's native farm animal genetic resources, so enabling farmers to meet the challenge of sustainable farming in an era of climate change and increasing cost pressures.
A variety of food and farming products for consumers derived from sustainable livestock production systems.

Our Mission-
Promote knowledge and the keeping of registered UK rare breed livestock.
Monitor the populations of native breeds and take action where necessary.
Support and encourage responsible breeding programmes.
Maintain and develop our gene bank of rare native breeds.
Support and participate in research.
Influence governments to ensure that there is a clear understanding of the issue of genetic diversity and the importance of conservation.
Work with governments to minimise the impact of disease outbreaks.

Conservation Projects

Genetic Analysis & Breeding Programmes-
Geneped analysis (breed analysis) is a very important conservation tool; historical data of a breed and current pedigree registration along with a number of calculations produces a comprehensive picture of the genetic makeup of the past and current day breed population. This information allows RBST to advise more effectively on conservation breeding projects; it also enables us to highlight any males that are being under used in a population and identifies those which are the least related to other males. This information also assists RBST when collecting for the gene bank; ensuring semen is collected from animals across the whole genetic range found within a breed.

A typical analysis costs £1,000 per breed and we have at least two breeds waiting for this work to be done.

RBST National Gene Bank-
RBST maintains a National Gene Bank of frozen semen, which has been collected from male animals recommended by breed societies as being good examples of the breed. This means that we have a genetic record of rare and important bloodlines, which are as unrelated as possible to ensure that genetic diversity is maintained within the breed. These samples would be used to re-establish a breed in the event of threatened extinction and may also prove useful to commercial farmers in breeding animals to meet the farming challenges of the future in an era of climate change and increasing costs. Our target is 25 males as unrelated as possible within each breed, but we are very far short of this target for many of our breeds.

It costs £3,500 to collect from a bull and £5,000 to collect from a stallion. Of the total collection, 15% goes to the owner for their own use, 50% goes into the archive gene bank and the remaining 35% is available for conservation breeding programmes.

We are facing real challenges in funding the collections we would like to make this year. Please support us and help us to protect the future of our rare breeds.

National Animal Germplasm Program (NAGP)
As animal genebanks are initiated, they all have the common need to manage information about their country's genetic resources. The U.S. had developed a first version of such a database and it became apparent there were needs for improvement. As the result of close collaborations already in place with Brazil, Canada, and the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, it was decided to initiate a joint venture to develop the next version of the database. This is the first time 3 countries have become partners to build a common database for animal genetic resources (AnGR). We believe the platform being developed will also have utility for other countries that want to better manage their AnGR.

Genetic Conservation Initiative

The aim of this group is inform breeders of the present genetic makeup of the US and Canada, promote the propagation and breeding of higher percentage Flett and Dailley (preferably 100%) sheep while implementing procedures and breeding plans for the preservation and improvement of these lines, as well as promoting the idea of tracking lines and collecting of superior Domestic rams, rare patterned rams, rams with unique lineage, and locating, purchasing, and storing straws of previously collected Domestic rams and/or rams with rare patterns, markings and lineage.

This group also hopes to encourage the use of UK Import semen, do away with calculating "UK Percentage" (instead, calculate the percentage from each ram), and create and implement Rationed Semen Use and Ram-Rotating Breeding Programs to preserve both the semen of each individual ram imported and the genetic diversity of the North American flocks, to create an image that each import should be viewed as the very last, that every straw and the offspring from such straw is sacred and should not be wasted or removed from the gene pool without proper reasoning, and to foster good relations and communications between buyers and sellers for future generations looking to import.

With these goals in mind, we hope to prevent situations like the Flett Sheep, where only one 100% Animal exists, or cases such as Enfield Greyling, Todhill Jericho, and likely others, where the semen is no longer available.

  1. Danny, I thought you might want to know that I have an F1 Minder ram too... Spotted moorit katmoget, not sure if he is Ab or Albf or both, but almost totally white. I just brought him back home from New Mexico.
